Fly.Union – Close Doors, Open Windows (2008)[Mixtape] + Music Video

Hosted by the indieground God mixtape DJ, Mick Boogie, Close Doors, Open Windows is personally my first glimpse into the up & coming Ohio group, Fly.Union. I’ve previously listened to some of the tracks from the mixtape on Myspace and peeped the video for Big Trucks, and I must admit this entire mixtape has the possiblity of making it until my ipod. Composed of group members, Jerreau (MC), L.E. (MC), JSwifa (Producer), and Eyeon (Producer), the collective has managed to create an interesting sound in which old school & new school mesh to make something which appeals to the old heads, but is viably radio-friendly. While remaining conscious even on tracks with titles like “Big Trucks” the group always has enough swagger to make you feel like you’re listening to a top 40 radio station. Lil’ Wayne like flows, Cool Kids like production, Kidz in the Hall like lyrics… what a Fly.Union. Peep the video for the “Big Trucks” and d/l the mixtape after the jump.

Ray Protege – Hip(ster) Hop [Mixtape](2008)

All of the biggest “still-indie-but-almost-major” cats of 2008. Wale, Mic Terror, Kidz in the Hall, Kid Cudi, Cool Kids, Hollywood Holt & Mano, Pacific Divsion, The Knux, Micky Factz and more. Don’t sleep on the kids. Shouts to Rebecca the promoter for hooking me up with this joint (and many others).

BTW, you can cop that shirt here.

Amanda Diva – Life Experience EP (2007)[WEB]

Been looking for this one a hell of a long time along with other cats. For those who are unfamiliar Amanda Diva (who has worked with the likes of Lupe Fiasco, Q-Tip, & DJ Cannon) has been holding shit down for a good minute for real female emcees (although cats ought to look at her as just an emcee without all the connotations of being a female spitter) from her first appearance on Def Poetry Jam up until her ’07 stint as a replacement emcee for Floetry’s Natalie. Continuing in the tradition of Ivy League educated hip-hoppers such as Kidz in the Hall’s Naledge & Double O, Diva drops intelligent, yet common man friendly tracks. Looking for something to listen to on a lazy weekend morning? Check the album and if you like it buy it here (def check the tracks 40 Emcees & Windows Over Harlem).
